“Wilderness” is an excellent example of a contemporary version of nature literature. If you love reading Thoreau, Aldo Leopold, or Ed Abbey this book is for you. It highlights the connection between nature and the soul/spirituality. Wonderful read!

Thank you Scott. I have read several books about hiking and it was a wonderful surprise to read about your adventures from the perspective of enjoying nature. Being in nature for the love of nature. Learning about life, yourself from being in nature. Not using your adventure to rant about what is wrong in the world but the healing, rejuvenating power of the beauty, the quiet, sleeping outside and being on foot. Refreshing!
Like yourself, I came from the midwest and grew up playing in the woods and creeks. I moved to the desert southwest in my 30’s and have fallen in love with the desert and canyon lands. Your book has brought to my attention new places I hope to explore with my teen age hiking partner, my granddaughter.

Beautifully written. Stillman captures the beautiful solitude in our wild places, what keeps us returning and why we ultimately come out of the wilderness. Brought back so many trips and made me long to get out again.

This is one of the most peaceful books I’ve ever read. Scott takes you right along with him and you can visualize every thing he sees and feels.

A nice read that transported me to the canyons of southeastern Utah and the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Sometimes a solo backpacking trip to get you back in touch with life’s fundamentals is just what a person needs to regain one’s sanity. Thanks, Scott Stillman!

I enjoyed this book very much! Every word was well chosen. Each chapter has a different lesson so to speak, with all the same lessons threaded from chapter to chapter.
I have not been an avid reader and have chosen non-fiction, I’ve always loved books written of the outdoors. I started reading John Krakauer as I subscribed to Outside Magazine. I was hooked and now find Scott Stillman’s book is a wonderful read! I’m really hooked now.
If you’ve ever wondered why you love the outdoors this book is for you! If you don’t appreciate the outdoors, this book will teach you the way to become a lover of the outdoors, and wilderness. I strongly recommend this book for anyone looking to escape this crazy world we live in!

An inspiration to visit the wonders of Earth’s wilderness and use their teachings to learn the beauty that lies within.
Seek the spark in the darkness.

Loved the detail in describing where you went Chapter 15 I highlighted in my book My God. How long have we been sleepwalking? Where have I been? Then perhaps for only a second we see everything, absolutely everything is beautiful!!! “Be still and know that I am God.” Psalms 46:10. Made me think of the beautiful places I have been and just thought “How beautiful!” Great book!!! Want my son to read this one for sure.

Stillman captures the powerful psychological and mental healing that uniquely comes from being in the wilderness. For those who find peace, joy, awe, love, and wholeness in the wild, Stillman’s words and experiences will resonate. This quick read is an uplifting reminder of why need wilderness, and why we need to find the time to immerse ourselves in it.

Reading Scott’s book rekindled some great memories of camping in the west. His chapter Wind River Range, Wyoming was especially memorable and his discussion of animal instincts provided a unique perspective of our natural world. An enjoyable read!

A very good book; I felt my souls was full when I finished. It was very descriptive in explaining the scenery. The analogies were rich. The literary support Scott Stillman used from other outdoor enthusiasts, such as John Muir, Ansel Adams and more made it even more exciting.

Being a nurse, I work grueling 12hr shifts and have trouble sleeping when I get home. Now, i pick up this book and read one chapter a night. It clears my mind and takes me away to a place of calm peace, a place where i long to be someday soon! Forget the hustle and bustle and stressful chaotic life as most of us know it, and travel to breathtaking quiet simplicity. Until I am taken there physically, my soul will soak in these magical places as I read the pages one by one. Superbly written, it feeds my craving soul exactly what it needs and puts me to ease within minutes. I can’t wait to visit some of these places, it has sparked the soul- searching fire inside of me! I love The Wilderness💚💜

The book brought back memories of hiking in the Big Horns, The Wind Rivers, The Beartooths, Canyonlands, Cascades, Olympic National Park, Chicago Basin, Indian Peaks Wilderness, Gila Wilderness and many shorter hikes. Like the author we started with minimal quality gear and collected it over the years. The author has a unique skill of capturing his feelings as he walked alone in the wilderness. Even when you are with a group you seem to be alone as you walk at your own pace and ponder the beauty, the isolation, the grandeur and the symphony God created in a similar manner to Mr. Stillman. I will read this book over and over to attempt to capture all the meaning of the wilderness inspired thoughts conveyed in this beautifully written manuscript. I especially liked Chapter 24 where he states “beauty is a choice.” Perhaps beauty is in the heart of the beholder. Chapter 24 alone is worth the price of the book. Buy it, read it and then if you haven’t done so already, go out and seek wilderness.

What a great read ! For any lover of nature, backpacking, hiking and journaling “Wildernesses” will leave you with a smile on your face. I fantasize almost daily about the adventures the author so poetically laid out before me.

Such a peaceful feeling comes over you by just reading this book. Growing up in a small village in the southern Colorado Rockies, I can see what he is seeing, I can feel what he is feeling. I have for as long as I can remember had a deep appreciation for our great outdoors, Scott has a way of making that sense of appreciation even stronger. Thanks for taking me away from the daily grind by just reading your book.

A mesmerizing, uplifting read that helped take me from the day-to-day hustle and back to my inner child each time I picked it up. I took my time, reading short segments or chapters each day. I enjoyed keeping my phone nearby to look up images of the places described. My husband and I love to get away to travel, hike, and camp and I hope we get to explore some of the locations Stillman described in this book.

I loved this book. It made me feel like I was there. I passed it on to a fellow hiker

I often read wilderness books to remind me of the amazing adventures I’ve had throughout my lifetime. Somehow they never truly “get” what wilderness means – or what it means to our soul. Scott not only “gets” it – he is able to accurately describe it to others. How many words are there for a beautiful sunset? Too many authors try to wrap around the essence of beauty in the wild. Scott’s words are not just flowery – they ring true. Thanks to this book I now have my epitaph… “When I die I go back to as I was before” Thanks Scott.

This is a great book for anyone who has a passion for the outdoors and enjoys getting away from busy life. The author puts in perspective how important it is to include nature time in our lives. It’s easy to read, it flows well, it makes you think and it’s hard to put down.
